With all of the recent uproar over various State attempts to curb the illegal immigration that the Fed seems unable or unwilling to control, the term “Racial Profiling” keeps coming up.
What is racial profiling? In layman’s terms it might be described as assuming that a person fits a set of criteria just because they are of a certain race. however, as with most thing in life, it ain’t quite that cut and dried.
Lets put one thing to bed right now. Being in this country with out following the laws and procedures laid down is a CRIME. Forget all of the BS arguments about just trying to find a better life. Do it the right way or be a criminal.
For the next few minutes you are a officer of the law. A crime has been committed. You receive the cal that the suspect is a white male, 6’4″ tall, approximately 210# with long curly blonde hair. In the course of your duties do you pay closer attention to white males, black, or hispanic males? No brainer.
Now lets say a crime has been committed and the description is of a Hispanic male, 5’2″ to 6’2″ between the age of 12 and 102. So here is the problem. That fits virtually every Hispanic male alive on the face of the earth. How do you look for an “individual” amongst a race, based only on racial criteria? And lets put one thing to bed right now. Being in this country with out following the laws and procedures laid down is a CRIME. Forget all of the BS arguments about just trying to find a better life. Do it the right way or be a criminal.
That is the problem the legislature faces. Not all illegal immigrants are Hispanic. But statistically most are. How do you NOT profile the person who has committed a crime based on their race?
The laws are being written with every attempt to make sure that someone is questioned regarding their immigration status ONLY if they are being questioned in conjunction with another possible violation. Will officers abuse the letter of the law? The potential exists, as does abuse of power by an officer exist in any other situation. The greatest majority of Officers will I suspect, treat the new laws as guidelines that will allow them to do their jobs properly.
Or, as Ralph would say,”You don’t try and hunt elk in a herd of Hyenas, Dummy!”
